Programme for Friday 12th August

Culture Bite

Verbal Arts Centre - Bloom’s Café
Mark Black & the Roots Band
(Blues & Roots)

Friday 12th, 12.30-2.30pm - Verbal Arts Centre
at Double Bastion nr. Bishops Gate

Over the last number of years, Mark Black has become something of a musical phenomenon in his native Donegal, winning a broad and dedicated following. His new album Sweet Rescue Blues is a unique slice of rootsy blues, a musical spaghetti western, although there is an obvious influence of his native Ireland with a strong use of celtic melodies throughout the album. In addition to being an exceptional musician – Mark is a natural born performer, whose tales and anecdotes are woven seamlessly into his song writing.

Mark Black & the Roots Band are at the cutting edge of new roots based music in Ireland. The live show features a power house, dynamite explosion of rhythms, didgeriidoos, amplified 12 string acoustic guitars and lap steels, drums, bass and soaring female backing vocals. This is one of the most dynamic and unique live acts in the country and not to be missed. The band have recently performed at the Rory Gallagher International Festival, the Castlebar Blues Festival, the Limavady Jazz and Blues Festival and Glastonbury '09.
